Indira Gandhi was the child of Nehru and she was elected as the leader of the Indian Congress Party in 1955. She then went on the become India's Prime Minister in 1965, and declared martial law in 1975 amidst an election scandal. Two years later she lost in the polls, but returned in 1980 with a landslide victory. Although she was assassinated in 1984 by her own bodyguard during her lifetime she had pushed for the end of poverty and women's rights in India. She was also popular over the explosion of India's first nuclear weapon and their victory over Pakistan in 1971.
