Summary
Stalin designed the Five Year Plans in order to help Russia out of an economic slump. He intended to make everyone equal, while making peasants work collectively to earn money. The people had no say in their lives, and any surplus that was produced was immediately handed over to the government. Many grew unhappy with Stalin's plans and as a result he was shot in 1921 at the start of the Great Purges.
