On May 4th 1989 massive rallies were held in honour of the 70th anniversary of the last major democratic uprising
A mass of students remained and eventually started a hunger strike
Li Peng took a harsh view, but no action was taken
By June 3rd they broke into the square and opened fired on the students
400-800 people were killed, although many were not students
